Homoeopathic Scope and Limitations in Management of Acute andChronic Poisoning

Poisoning remains a major public health concern worldwide and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality.
Acute poisoning requires prompt identification of the toxic agent, emergency stabilization, decontamination, and administration of specific antidotes when indicated.
Chronic poisoning, resulting from prolonged exposure to toxic substances such as heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals, often presents with multisystem manifestations requiring long-term management.
Homoeopathy, based on the principle of similia similibus curentur (like cures like), aims to stimulate the body’s self-healing mechanisms through individualised remedy selection.
In poisoning cases, homoeopathy may have a supportive role in alleviating symptoms, improving general well-being, and assisting recovery during the convalescent phase. However, its role is limited in life-threatening toxicological emergencies where evidence-based conventional interventions such as airway management, antidotal therapy, and intensive supportive care are essential.
This review examines the potential scope and inherent limitations of homoeopathy in the management of acute and chronic poisoning, emphasizing the importance of an integrated and ethical approach to patient care.
Poisoning is an important medico‑legal emergency in medical practice. Homeopathic practitioners must understand their legal duties, ethical responsibilities, scope of practice, and limitations in poisoning management. While homeopathy may provide supportive symptomatic care in selected cases, emergency toxicological management and timely referral remain essential.
