Abstract

Background:

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) comprise a diverse group of 21 conditions that disproportionately affect the world’s poorest populations, perpetuating cycles of poverty, disability, and social exclusion. Despite being preventable and treatable, NTDs continue to impose a substantial global health burden.

Objective

This comprehensive review synthesizes the current epidemiological landscape, treatment and control strategies, and progress toward elimination targets for all 21 WHO-designated NTDs, while identifying persistent gaps that threaten the achievement of the 2030 roadmap goals.

Methodology

It is a comprehensive narrative review synthesizing published literature, WHO reports, and programmatic data on all 21 WHO-recognized neglected tropical diseases.

Key results / Findings

As of 2023, an estimated 1,495 billion people required interventions against NTDs, a decrease from the 2010 baseline. Between 2015 and 2021, the disease burden dropped from 17.2 million to 14.1 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), while NTD-related deaths decrease from approximately 139,000 to 119,000 in 2023 alone, 867.1 million people received treatment for at least one NTD. As of early 2026, 60 countries have eliminated at least one NTD, more than halfway toward WHO’’s 2030 target of 100 countries. However, significant gaps remain: global funding aid for NTDs declined by 41% between 2018 and 2023; climate change, population displacement and conflicts are emerging threats; and the 2030 targets risk not being achieved without renewed investment.

Conclusion

While remarkable progress has been achieved over the past two decades, sustained political commitment, innovative research, integrated approaches, and stable financing are essential to end the neglect of these diseases by 2030 and beyond.
