Occupational Mental Health Literacy in Zimbabwe's Energy Sector: A Conceptual Review and Research Agenda

Orientation: Workers in electricity generation, transmission and distribution operate under conditions that the occupational health literature associates with elevated psychosocial risk, yet the psychological dimension of this work has received little attention in Southern Africa.
Research purpose: This review examines whether mental health literacy can presently be measured in Zimbabwe’s energy-sector workforce, and specifies the conditions under which it could be.
Motivation for the study: No study of mental health literacy among Zimbabwean energy-sector workers was located. Before prevalence can be estimated or interventions designed, it is necessary to establish whether available instruments measure what they claim to measure in this population.
Research design, approach and method: A conceptual and narrative review synthesising four adjacent literatures: the mental health literacy construct and its instrumentation; psychosocial risk in male-dominated industries; the Zimbabwean mental health system and its emic measurement tradition; and suicide literacy as a separable domain.
Main findings: The Mental Health Literacy Scale demonstrates strong construct validity and reliability, but content validity is by a wide margin its weakest measurement domain. In the only content validation conducted for this region, all 35 items met the relevance threshold when rated by professional research experts, while only ten did so when rated by frontline clinical workers. The methodological precedent for emic instrument development already exists in Zimbabwe in the form of the Shona Symptom Questionnaire, and has not been extended to the literacy construct.
Practical/managerial implications: Literacy provision without an established and credible disclosure route is unlikely to convert into help-seeking.
Contribution/value-add: The review reframes an awareness question as a measurement question and sets out a sequenced research agenda.
